Jathas to Pak Cancelled

                    NEW DELHI: The Government has put a ban on Sikh jathas to Pakistan this year in view of tension at Indo-Pak border and the existing travel restrictions.

           Jathas (groups of Sikh pilgrims) traditionally travel to Nankana Saheb in Pakistan on Baisakhi, a festival of harvests celebrated all over the sub-continent. The Government-sponsored jathas were to be organised during April 11-30.

Steep Hike in Passport Fee

          NEW DELHI: The Ministry of External Affairs has announced a steep increasse in passport fee with effect from April 1, 2002. Decentralising procedures to reduce delay, the MEA will now receive applications through district cells manned by State Govenment officers.

           Verification will be done by the local police before the forms are sent to the reginal passport odffices. Police verification has been the major bottleneck holding up passports.

           Fee for all services, except Tatkaal, has been increased. Details are at www.passport.nic.in

WHO Travel Guide

          NEW DELHI: The World Health Organisation has brought out a new travel and health guide for the benefit of international travellers. The guide helps the traveller to know the vulnerability of contracting dreaded diseases from travelling from country to country.

           Stomach ailments caused by contaminated food and water, malaria-like fevers, jaundice and those sexually transmitted are the most common forms of afflictions the travellers are exposed to world-wide. The author of the guide is Dr Lindsay Martinez.
