Amarnath Yatra - Things to Remember The following are some do's and dont's Amarnath yatris may take note of during the pilgrimage: 1) A yatri should be medically and mentally fit to trek such heights. Aged, infirm and ailing and ill-clad persons will not be allowed to proceed beyond Pahalgam and Baltal. Yatra without registration will also not be allowed. 2) Carry heavy woollens, gloves, monkey caps, umbrella, light rain coat, sleeping bag or blankets, water-proof shoes with bottom grip, a small water-proof tent, torch, a walking stick, medical kit. Women are advised to wear pants or salwar suits and not sari. 3) Carry some biscuits, sugar, dry fruits, honey, milk powder, tinned food, water bottle, plastic plate, tumbler, spoon etc. Against payments one will be given rations and firewood at the halting stations. 4) Ensure that you take the services of only registered ponywalla, labourer or dandiwalla. They should have the authorised tokens. These things are arranged at Pahalgam or Baltal as the case may be. 5) Ensure that the pony carrying your luggage moves alongwith you. If they fall far behind, you may find it difficult to join up. 6) Carry sufficient cash to pay for accommodation and other essential requirements. 7) Medical facilities are free yet one can carry one's own personal kit. 8) Carrying/use of alcohol en route is prohibited. So also one does not take non-vegetarian food during the yatra. 9) Don't overstrain on steep gladients. 10) Don't relax where there are warning notices. 11) Don't break traffic discipline or try to overtake others in difficult stretches on the route. 12) Don't volunteer to pay more than the prices and rates fixed by the Government for porters, ponies, dandies, rations, firewood, accommodation etc.
