Spot fixing: Probe into controversial MCG match likely
Sydney: The chairman of the International Cricket Council's anti-corruption and security unit, Ronnie Flanagan,
has said that ICC could widen its probe into the alleged ‘spot-fixing’ scandal, to cover the controversial Twenty20 match between Pakistan and Australia at the
Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) last summer. Investigations could cover Pakistan
’s ''dysfunctional'' tour of Australia , though at this stage, the unit had no
evidence to support match-fixing claims at the MCG, the Sydney Morning Herald
quoted Flanagan, as saying. ''We will go where the evidential trail takes us,''
he added. Australia beat Pakistan by two runs in the controversial Twenty20 match
played at the MCG. Former Australian batsman Dean Jones said he would not be surprised
if the anti-corruption unit went through that match. ''If they are doing their
job properly, they should look at every game they played here, every game in the
last year,” he added. Jones also raised a critical question whether Pakistan was
“the only team implicated in this.'' Cricket Australia (CA) general manager affairs
Peter Young said the governing body was prepared to help if a new investigation
was launched. The Pakistan cricket team is in the midst of a betting scam, allegedly
involving captain Salman Butt and fast bowlers Mohammed Aamir and Mohammed Asif.
