Congress workers make beeline at Sonia's residence to greet her on re-election as party President
New Delhi: A large number of Congress party workers and supporters converged here at the residence of Sonia Gandhi on Saturday to hail her unanimous re-election as the
President of their party for the fourth term. Party supporters arriving from different parts of
the country danced, as they gathered here in big groups carrying banners and Congress
party flags. These supporters later on lined up outside Sonia Gandhi's residence with
bouquets and garlands and anxiously waited for their leader to accept their heartiest
greetings. Later, Sonia Gandhi obliged all her supporters and waved at them. Sonia Gandhi
is the party president holding the post for the longest tenure. She has been heading the
party since April 1998 when she replaced the late Sitaram Kesri. On Friday, Sonia was
declared winner for a fourth consecutive term, with PM Manmohan Singh leading partymen
in congratulating her on the lawns of 24, Akbar Road. Sonia thanked the workers in a brief
speech by saying that Congress represented the "sentiments and aspirations of every
section and part of India and this realisation has made me do whatever little I could".
