Patna celebrates Holi, the 'matka phod' way

Patna: The narrow by lanes of Patna resounded with shouts of 'Holi hai' as scores of rust brown earthen pots, received smashing blows from jocund revellers on the occasion of Holi, the festival of colours. The festival re-enacts the famous childhood prank of Lord Krishna-- the breaking of milk pots of the cow herdress of Mathura. "Matka breaking is a traditional thing which is being carried on from the days of Lord Krishna. Such kind of event increases brotherhood. In today's age by organising such event we are trying to be united, removing all the barriers of caste, creed, and religion. On the occasion of Holi we organise this competition and we are doing this from past four to five years. This tradition should go on so that the people can come together," said Shanta Jha, a local. The festival had a boisterous overtone in Kankar Bagh area of Patna as the revellers danced vigorously to the fierce and fast beats of the drums even as they got drowned by water poured by the people around, adding a fun element to the festival. The participants, formed huge pyramids to smash the matka, placed at a great height, decorated with mango leaves and bright yellow marigold flowers Scores of merrymakers poured out into the streets to have a look at the traditional ceremony.
