Women beat men in Dheenga Gawar festival

Jodhpur: Women in Jodhpur district on Saturday celebrated the traditional festival of "Dheenga Gawar" in which women beat men. Mainly women take part in the 16-day festival in praise of Hindu diety Gawar, an incarnation of goddess Parvati. Women dressed up as policemen and even as Lord Hanuman give a traditional beating to the village youth, much to the amusement of the onlookers. Legend has it that any bachelor who bears the beating, gets married by next year. "This festival is celebrated because the Gawar goddess blesses married women and unmarried women are blessed for a good husband," said Govind Kala, organiser of the festival. Cultural programmes were also held in which women danced and sang throughout the night.
