Militant Attack on Jammu Temple: 15 Killed

          JAMMU: Police have claimed that the terrorists who attacked devotees at the Raghunath temple here on Sunday, November 24, belonged to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba. In a late night encounter, the security forces also killed a militant holed up near the Shiv temple nearby.

           At least 15 people were killed and eleven injured when militants stormed the Raghunath temple here on Sunday , November 24, evening. Three militants lobbed grenades and fired indiscriminately before entering the temple around 7 pm. A heavy gun battle ensued between security forces and the heavily armed militants, lasting for nearly seven hours, before two terrorists were killed.

           The focus shifted to the Shiv temple, about 400 metres away, where the other militant was hiding. He was killed after a fierce fight, past midnight. Curfew has been imposed in Jammu city in the wake of the attack.

          In last March also terrorists had attacked the Raghunath temple, which is visited by hundreds of thousands of Hindu pilgrims from across the country every year. Eight civilians were killed and 19 injured. In September this year, more than 30 people were killed in Gujarat after two terrorists stormed the Akshardham temple. Both the gunmen were later killed by NSG commandos.

          SRINAGAR: At least nine army personnel were reported killed and about 20 others injured when militants blew up their vehicle by triggering a landmine blast on Sringar-Jammu national highway on Saturday, November 23.

          The explosion took place at Lower Munda, about 100 km from here. The blast came a day after Lashker-e-Toiba militants attacked a CRPF camp in the heart of Srinagar killing six jawans.

(November 22, 2002)

          SRINAGAR: Six CRPF jawans were killed when a security camp in Regal Chowk area here was attacked by militants early on Friday, November 22, the police said. According to reports, the unidentified militants attacked the camp at about 6:45 am. A fierce gunbattle followed in which the two militants were also killed. At least 10 CRPF personnel were also injured in the shoot-out.

Naxals Blow Up Railway Station, Bus: 20 Passengers Killed (Go to Top)

          HYDERABAD: Naxalites belonging to the People's War Group blew up the Thummalchervu railway station in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh early on Wednesday, November 20, destroying the entire signalling and communication system. However, no loss of life was reported. In an earlier incident, on Monday, they blew up a State-owned RTC bus near Chintagudam village in Warangal district, killing 20 people.

          In the first incident, at about 2 am 20 Naxalites went to the railway station located between Pudagurallu and Nadikudi sections and ordered all the staff and waiting passengers to vacate the area and then used improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to blow up the station, effectively blocking all traffic on route to Guntur. There were no casualties and the rail track was reportedly intact. All the trains on Hyderabad-Guntur line had to be diverted via Vijayawada.

           In the attack on the bus, land mines were used. It blasted the Tupakulagudem-Eturunagaram bus. Most of the passengers were returning from a shandy in Kannaigudem. As the vehicle rumbled towards Eturunagaram around 7.30 pm, the Naxalites triggered land mines placed under a culvert.

          Mutilated bodies were strewn all over the place. Several people were grievously wounded. The mishap was discovered two hours later when another bus came on the route.

100 kg of RDX Seized in Srinagar (Go to Top)

          SRINAGAR: Huge quantities of arms and ammunition, including 100 kg of RDX, were seized in Srinagar on Saturday, November 16. Officials said the militants had planned to use them to disrupt assembly elections held in the State in September-October but having failed to do so were trying to re-route them to other camps.

           Rashmi Ranjan Swain, Senior Superintendent of Police, Srinagar, said the militants were now targeting politicians in the valley. Acting on an intelligence report, Special Operations Group of the Srinagar police raided their hide-out in Anchar Lake area of the city. More than 100 kg of RDX, hi-tech pistols, wireless sets, grenades and wireless explosive devices were recovered.

           At least a dozen militant groups are fighting against the Indian Government in Jammu and Kashmir, India's only Muslim majority State. More than 35,000 people have died in 13 years of rebellion in Kashmir. Separatists, however, put the toll at 80,000.

Two 'Militants' Shot in Delhi (Go to Top)

          NEW DELHI: Two militants belonging to Lashkar-e-Toiba were killed on Sunday evening, November 3, in the basement of a shopping mall, Ansal Plaza, in New Delhi, in a shoot-out, the police said. The two, in car and heavily-armed, were being followed by the police.

          The shoot-out occurred outside when the shopping mall was packed with hundreds of people, shopping on the eve of Diwali. Some arms and ammunition were also recovered from the slain militants.
