Dreaded Poacher Escapes Custody: Alert Sounded
in Rajaji and Corbett Parks (Go to Top)
(Thursday, September 12, 2002)

DEHRA DUN: Security has been tightened in Rajaji National Park and Jim Corbett National Park in Uttaranchal after a dreaded poacher escaped from police custody. The poacher, Kashinath, escaped on Wednesday, September 11, when he was being taken to forest department officials for questioning.

Kashinath, alongwith his associates, was arrested last month and a number of tiger hides and body parts were recovered from his gang. Officials said that an intensive combing operation was on to nab the poacher.

Senior forest officials said the poacher could not make good his escape without help from either police or forest officials.

Environmentalists have been alarmed at the incidence of poaching in the two national parks. Recently, several male elephants were found dead with their tusks cut off, which led to the strengthening of security in the parks.  The guards, armed only with sticks, are no match for the better equipped poacher gangs. Poaching increases during the monsoon season when the park closes for visitors. 'Operation Monsoon', an annual exercise to nab poachers, was launched after the park was closed on June 16.

Although trafficking of wildlife products is banned in India, poaching of animals for their skin, bones and body parts continues.

Lately Subramanyam gave up wood work and took to ivory art, which he said fetched him money many times more than the wooden art pieces. Subramanyam said, "I used to receive orders for ivory work. For the work that I do on wood I get Rs 10 but for the same work on ivory I get Rs 50. This is why I started doing this work with ivory".

Giving details, Sreekumar, Range Forest Officer, said, "We got information from a reliable source that one Subramnyam was making carvings out of illegal ivory. Then we raided his house based on this information and recovered these carvings. We can't decide the price now as most of them are incomplete. The prices are usually decided by the customer."
