Thousands of people are thronging a healing fair being held in Bhopal.
Mentally challenged patients and those disabled due to the Bhopal gas
tragedy come here to receive the treatment that is based on Ayurveda,
the ancient Indian system of medicine. The practitioners holding the
fair annually claim that the herbal preparation can cure patients suffering
from various mental disorders. This year more than 2,000 patients were
given the medicinal potion free of cost. Chandrashekhar, one of the
traditional Ayurveda practitioners, said he uses a variety of herbs
to prepare the medicinal concoction, which is then administered while
the patient is half submerged in water. "The medicines are for people
who are mentally challenged, have a loss of memory or even abnormal
people. I give the medicine to the patients who stand in waistline deep
water. The medicine could be given to patients above one year old. The
patients tend to get well within a year of giving the medicine. The
water is necessary as the medicine is very strong and may have an adverse
effect," said Chandrashekhar. National level herbal fairs have been
organised in the last few years by the state's trading cooperative,
with increased participation from both manufacturers and consumers.
People have faith in the medicine's healing properties that makes them
frequent the fair every year. "This is the third year my daughter has
been given the massage and there is a 50 per cent improvement in her
conditions. Since last year, she can manage to do her daily routine
on her own," said Narayan Singh, father of a disabled girl. Allopathic
doctors are however, critical of this treatment and refute the claim
of Ayurveda practitioners that the herbal concoction has the potential
to cure those mentally ill.
